How to Negotiate Your Salary (Without the Awkwardness)

How to Negotiate Your Salary (Without the Awkwardness)

Many people avoid negotiating because it feels uncomfortable. With preparation, it becomes a calm, professional conversation — and it is a normal part of accepting a job.

1. Research the range

Look at similar roles on JobWhale and elsewhere to see typical salary ranges for your location and experience. Many adverts now include a range, which is a useful starting point.

2. Know your value

List your achievements, skills and qualifications that match what the role needs. This is your evidence.

3. Choose your moment

The best time to negotiate is usually after you have been offered the job and before you accept. At that point the employer has already decided they want you.

4. Use clear, friendly wording

For example: “Thank you — I am delighted with the offer. Based on my experience and the responsibilities of the role, I was hoping for a salary of £X. Is there flexibility?” Stay positive and calm, and then let them respond.

5. Look at the whole package

If the salary is fixed, other things may be negotiable or valuable:

  • Pension contributions
  • Annual leave
  • Flexible or hybrid working
  • Training and development budget
  • Start date or a review after six months

6. Know when pay is banded

Some employers, including much of the public sector, use set pay bands. There the conversation is often about which band or starting point applies, so ask how the role has been graded.

7. Get it in writing

Once you have agreed, ask for the terms to be confirmed in your written offer or contract before you resign from your current job.
