Ace Your NHS Interview: A Step-by-Step Guide

Ace Your NHS Interview: A Step-by-Step Guide

NHS interviews follow a clear structure. Panels score every candidate against the same criteria, so the best preparation is not guesswork — it is showing, with real examples, that you meet what the role asks for.

1. Start with the person specification

Every NHS job advert links to a person specification listing essential and desirable criteria. Interview questions are built from these. Print it out and, next to each criterion, write one specific example from your work, studies or volunteering that proves it.

2. Learn the NHS values

NHS recruitment is values-based. Expect questions that test whether you naturally work in line with the values set out in the NHS Constitution:

  • Respect and dignity
  • Commitment to quality of care
  • Compassion
  • Improving lives
  • Working together for patients
  • Everyone counts

Do not just recite them. Prepare a short real story for two or three of them.

3. Use the STAR method

Structure every example as Situation, Task, Action, Result. Spend most of your time on the action you personally took and what changed because of it. Good scenarios to prepare: a time you worked in a team, dealt with a difficult person, handled pressure, made a mistake and learned from it, and went the extra mile for someone.

4. Research the organisation

Read the trust’s website, its priorities and its latest news. Being able to say why you want to work there, not just in the NHS, makes a real difference.

5. On the day

  • Expect a panel of two or three people, often with one taking notes. Speak to everyone, not only the person who asked the question.
  • Answer the question you were asked, then stop. It is fine to pause and think.
  • Bring a copy of your application and your list of examples.

6. Have questions ready

Ask about training and development, how the team works together, or what a successful first six months looks like. It shows genuine interest.
